Africa's Growing Cybersecurity Crisis
Cybercrime cost African businesses an estimated $4 billion in 2023 according to Interpol. From ransomware attacks on hospitals to SIM-swap fraud targeting fintech users, the threats are real, growing, and often preventable with basic awareness.
1. Strong, Unique Passwords
Use a password manager like Bitwarden (free and open-source) to generate and store unique, complex passwords for every account. Never reuse passwords across services.
2. Two-Factor Authentication
Enable 2FA on every account that supports it — especially email, banking, and social media. Use an authenticator app rather than SMS where possible, as SIM swaps can bypass SMS codes.
3. Phishing Awareness
Over 90% of cyberattacks begin with a phishing email. Watch for urgency and pressure, suspicious sender addresses, requests for passwords via email, and links that don't match their stated destination.
4. Software Updates
Most successful attacks exploit known vulnerabilities in outdated software. Enable automatic updates for your operating system, browser, and apps.
5. Data Backups
Follow the 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies of important data, on 2 different media, with 1 offsite via cloud backup. Ransomware is devastating without backups.
A Career in Cybersecurity
Start with CompTIA Security+, then progress to CEH or OSCP. The Google Cybersecurity Certificate is an excellent low-cost starting point for African learners.
